One week ago today I was in Washington D.C. with some of the most incredible souls. My friends Cassidy, Katie, Elissa and MJ are just a few living examples of people who have not stopped advocating against the struggle for human rights, specifically those in Central Africa being affected by Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army.

A great man once said, “…injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and whatever affects ones directly, affects all indirectly…” This war is not yet over, and as such, we’re far from done as well.

While at the hair salon today, my stylist was watching, “Let’s Make A Deal” on her big screen TV. It originally aired in the 1960s with host Monty Hall and is like The Price Is Right, except audience members dress up in the silliest and most outrageous costumes. She said I was really showing my (young) age since I had never heard of the show, but we did find common ground in the greatness that once was Hollywood Squares.

Recently, at the most random of times, 90s songs have been getting stuck in my head. Just snippets of the song mind you, and then I’m left scrambling, trying to remember other parts of the song, the name of the song, who sings it etc. etc.

The night before she told me to wake her, but when morning breaks,
at first I linger, hesitant to unsettle the cloud of sweet serenity around us.

then

all of a sudden,

everything changes.

I no longer want her eyes closed, but looking at me, dancing the way they do, with that funny smirk of hers, telling me she wants us to spend every waking moment together.

And yet,
still I lie,
wanting to hold onto this simple untroubled state of tranquility.

Until I become increasingly mindful of the second hand clock ticking,
and not in my favour.
I can feel literal balls of nerves racing up the inside of my body.
That rush of a feeling when you realize there’s only so much time left,
and you have no idea when you’ll see each other next.

As we drive across that bridge one more time, I can’t stop the tears from streaming down my face, which she doesn’t see because I turn away

and look out the window at the passing landscape, now just a bit blurry behind my shades.

But I know our friendship knows no bounds,
and when sneak a peak,
you catch my glance;
we both smile

and I think to myself, “how did I get so lucky?”

I love documentaries.

And you might say I love Oprah too.

So how EVERYONE failed to put two and two together and tell me that Oprah has a documentary club is beyond me (rude people, rude!). But at the same time, I also feel like a complete idiot for not assuming she would have one.

Luckily enough, I found this gem in the library today; and now it’s time to pop it in the DVD player and see how it fairs.

Closing statement: I also love libraries.

My friend Monica and I love making lists and for quite some time now, we’ve been on the hunt of what to list about next. Well, thanks to the recent trend on Twitter and this article on Thought Catalog, it was decided we must also partake.

here.is.mine:

1. a job

2. friends

3. a good cup of hot apple cider (not out of the box; I mean using real apple juice and a cinnamon stick please)

4. dinner with my grandmother in Uganda

6. a choir to join - a cappella preferred, but simply something with contemporary repertoire would do

11. for my thumb to stop feeling like it’s going to fall off (it happens every day anytime i’m here in the library; it’s as if I’m getting frostbite, but only on one finger!!!!!)

13. an unlimited INTERNATIONAL long distance plan so I can call my friends without having to use a phone card (which requires pressing at least 15 other numbers before even putting in the “final destination” number)

14. for certain people to email me back or call

15. stop being so lost in my thoughts/trying to read into what other people say/don’t say

16. to settle!

17. the power of invisibility (mainly for times when I want/do sing out loud/talk to myself)

18. to be, not just happy, but content.
